Please kindly introduce yourself

My name is Okoli Chidera Emmanuel, populary known as International DJ Derekz Effect

Tell us about your background

I was born and raised in Anambra State. Born into a family of Okoli Benjamin Onye Amaechi from Umunze in Orumba South Local Government in Anambra State. I am the last child out of 5 children (2 boys and 3 girls)

How did you get started.

Having initially planned to study Psychology at Enugu state university, my plans failed through, as his family were not financially capable enough to pay DJ Derekz university fees. Using my initiative, I decided to become a street entrepreneur, harnessing my own computer literacy business; in which I offered the paid service of teaching the basics of computer software. Having not been much of a success; I opened a call center, selling mobile recharge cards. When I found out that the business was competitive in an already saturated market, I decided to leave his business to his elder sister to manage.

Curious about developing within music, I, decided to join my brother, Flavour N’abania, who at the time was honing in on his musical talent, regularly performing at local bars. I worked with my brother as a ‘spray picker’- collecting money thrown as tips whenever my brother performed; and packing instruments after each gig. Having stuck to this role for some months; I envisioned one day that I would be playing to customers in bars, just like my brother. Being one to strike whilst the iron is hot, I invested in a used compact disc player and DJ mixes, and would play a selection of mixes in the DJ corner after my brother’s performances.

So this means that it was not an initial plan to be a DJ

No, It wasn’t but i think everything happened to get me to this place. I know it was God’s Plan.

So after you started playing after your brother’s performances, What next step did you take?

I built a strong following, with club and bar revelers requesting special mixes. This encouraged me to save more funds, which enabled him to buy a used professional DJ mixer, from friend and popular DJ personality at the time, DJ Bala. From here,I performed sets at small gigs, under the mentorship of his brother.

So your brother supported your career?

Yeah, he did……All the way. He was amazed by my creativity and he was there to mentor and support me.

What plan do you have for your career?

I am currently working on my first ever single “Fire” which should dropping on my birthday(10th May) and it is gonna be featuring RXD and CDQ , so anticipate it. It is gonna be dope.

Who is your role model?

My role model is DJ Kahled

What words do you have for those aspiring?

Be humble…..Be Consistent and you will make it.
